2016 Yellowstone, Glacier, Grand Tetons, and the Wood River Valley, Idaho

2016 Fall Itinerary for:

 This is our basic itinerary. We left a lot of time for animal sightings, photography and unexpected happenings. 🙂 Itinerary is subject to change due to weather or environmental conditions.
August 30   Denver, CO
Fly to Denver, CO. Dinner and overnight at Best Western.
August 31   Lander, WY
Pick up rental car and drive to Lander, WY. Dining at Gannet Grill and overnight at Holiday Inn Express.
September 1    Lander, WY to Cooke City, MT
Drive north via Cody and the Chief Joseph Highway to Cooke City.  Dining at Log Cabin Cafe and overnight at Elkhorn Lodge
September 2  Cooke City to Livingston, MT
Entire day in Yellowstone Park.  2 overnights at Yellowstone Pioneer Lodge in Livingston, MT  Dinner at Northern Pacific Beanery
September 3   Livingston and Bozeman, MT
Explore the area and hiking.  Dinner at Cateye Cafe.
September 4    East Glacier Park
Drive to East Glacier.  Dinner at Two Medicine Grill and 2 overnights at Mountain Pine Inn.
September 5  (Labor Day)  East Glacier Park
Entire day in Glacier Park East.  Running Eagle Falls,  Appistoki Falls, Paradise Point and Aster Falls.  Dining at Whistle Stop.
September 6   Glacier National Park
Going to the Sun Road.  Sunrift Gorge, Baring Falls, Jackson Glacier Overlook.  Drive to Many Glacier area for Appikuni Falls, Fishercap Lake.  Dine at Two Sisters and 2 overnights at Rising Sun.
September 7    Glacier National Park
Western side of Going to the Sun Road. Logan Pass with partial hike on Highline Trail.  Oberlin Bend, Big Bend, John’s Lake Loop Trail, stop at McDonald Lodge.  Dine at Rising Sun.
September 8  Libby, Montana   Note: Initial plan was to spend 2 days in Waterton, but Akimina Parkway under construction, so used Plan B.
Take the Going to the Sun Road west.  Travel on Rt 2 west  and north on Rt 93 to Eureka, MT. Koocanusa Bridge.  Arrive in Libby, MT for Farmers Market.  Dining at Last Straw Cafe and 2 overnights at Country Inn.
September 9  Libby, Montana
Red Cedars Trail, Swinging Bridge, Ross Creek Giant Cedars Grove.
Kootenai Falls, NordicFest in Libby.  Dining at Antlers Inn.
September 10  Glacier National Park
Yaak Falls in Troy, MT. Drive to Many Glacier, Trail of the Cedars, Fishercap Lake.  Dine at Two Sisters and 2 overnights at Swiftcurrent Motor Inn.
September 11    Glacier National Park
Entire day hiking…Fishercap Lake, Red Rock Falls, Bullhead Lake.
Dining at Swiftcurrent Restaurant.
September 12    Hamilton, MT
Drive to Hamilton, Montana.  Overnight at Bitterroot River Inn.
September 13    Wood River Valley, ID
Drive to Wood River Valley, Idaho. Stops at Stanley Lake and Park Creek Overlook. Dining at Perry’s. 3 overnights at Best Western Tylorean in Ketchum, ID.
September 14   Wood River Valley, ID
Entire day in Sawtooth National Recreation Area on the Sawtooth Scenic Byway.  Dining at Galena Lodge.
September 15   Wood River Valley, ID
Sun Valley lunch at Gretchens. Trail Creek hike. Hemingway Memorial.  Shadyside trail hike.
September 16    West Yellowstone, MT
Drive to West Yellowstone. Stock up on supplies.  Dining at Geyser Grill and overnight at Best Western Weston Inn.
September 17   Yellowstone
Cross from West Yellowstone to Canyon and travel north across Dunraven Pass.  Pass thru Lamar Valley to Cooke City.  Dining at Log Cabin Cafe and 5 overnights at Elkhorn Lodge.
September 18     Yellowstone
Hayden Valley, Fishing Bridge  Dining at Beartooth Cafe
September 19     Yellowstone
Beartooth Highway.  Soup and snacks at Stop the Car Trading Post.
September 20     Yellowstone
Wolf watching.  Yellowstone River Picnic Trail.  Dining at Log Cabin.
September 21     Yellowstone
Upper roads in YNP.  Blacktail Plateau drive. Trout Creek hike.  Dining at Miners Saloon.
September 22     Yellowstone
Drive to Canyon and do Rim drives and hikes.
Dining and 3 overnights at Canyon Lodge.
September 23     Yellowstone
Hayden Valley and Fishing bridge.  Dining at Fishing Bridge.
September 24     Yellowstone
Mystic Falls Hike.  Dining at Ernies in West Yellowstone.
September 25     Grand Tetons
Drive to Grand Teton National Park.  Re-stock supplies.  Dining and 5 overnights at Signal Mountain Lodge.
September 26     Grand Tetons
Schwabacher Landing. Moose Ponds hike at Jenny Lake.  Taggart Lake hike.  Dining at Red Fox Saloon.
September 27     Grand Tetons
Moose Wilson Road. Antelope Flats, Kelly. Gros Vente area. Brooks Lake.  Dining at Hatchet Grill.
September 28     Grand Tetons
Lupine Meadows area.   Murie Ranch tour.  Colter Bay Lakeshore Trail.  Dining at Jackson Lake Lodge.
September 29     Grand Tetons
Hike to Phelps Lake Overlook.  One more drive on Moose Wilson Road. Dining at Signal Mountain Lodge.  Drive Signal Mountain Summit road.
September 30     Lander, WY
Morning time in GTNP.  Drive to Lander, WY. Overnight at Holiday Inn Express.
October 1           Denver, CO
Lander, WY to Denver, CO.  Turn in car and overnight at Hampton.
October 2
Denver to home.

    Yellowstone is a awesome. Got drafted out if there in 1970 to fight in the Vietnam War. Feel lucky every time I get to go back!i

      I don’t know how NOT to be organized! 🙂 By the way, we don’t always eat where I plan, but mostly we do!!
